The prayer service is a prayer event unique to Shokoji Temple. We offer prayers with hope and determination for our future lives to be even a little better.
At the prayer service, a talisman called a Houtoku is prepared and prayers and resolve are written into it. The Houtoku is taken home after the ceremony and is treasured until the next year's event so that the prayers and resolve will not be forgotten. After one year has passed, it is dedicated to the temple at the prayer service.
During the ceremony, we quietly reflect on how we should behave in order to live our lives to the fullest this year. At the end of the ceremony, we chant the Nembutsu as a declaration of our determination to put into practice what we have reflected on, and also so that by repeating this process, we will be able to enter the Pure Land at the end of our lives, having lived our lives to the fullest.
