Memorial service

Purpose of the memorial service

Honen Shonin, the founder of the Jodo sect, passed away on January 25, 2nd year of the Kenryaku era and went to the Pure Land. The memorial service is an event to remember Honen Shonin and chant the Nembutsu.

Why do we chant the Nembutsu? It is because it is our "ticket" to go to the Pure Land at the end of our days, having lived each day to the fullest. We need a ticket to ride a train or an airplane. What is the "ticket" to go to the Pure Land? It is the Nembutsu. That is why we chant the Nembutsu.
