This is one of the events unique to the Jodo sect.
It is said to have begun in the Muromachi period when Taira no Sadakuni, the younger brother of the regent Taira no Sadayuki, aspired to become a monk and retreated to Shinnyodo (Tendai sect, Shinshogokurakuji) in Kyoto to perform a ten-day, ten-night chant of Buddhist prayer. The ten-day chant is based on the teachings of the Sutra of Immeasurable Life. After that, Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado highly praised the ten-day, ten-night chant, and permission was granted to hold the "Ten-Night Ceremony" at the head temple, Komyo-ji, in Kamakura.
As mentioned above, this event was originally held over ten days, but nowadays it has been shortened to just one day.
At Shokoji, we face the Buddha and our ancestors during the ceremony, reflect on ourselves, and make an effort to improve the quality of our lives. This means doing as many good things as possible and avoiding as many bad things as possible. In other words, it means reaffirming the essence of things and what is important, and putting them into action.
By repeating this process, we chant the Nembutsu so that we can live our lives to the fullest and be welcomed into the Pure Land at the end.
