Autumn Higankai

The purpose of the Autumn Equinox

The middle day of the equinox is when the sun rises due east and sets due west. This means you can accurately tell whether it is east or west by the direction of the sun.

The Pure Land where the Buddha and our ancestors reside is due west. We face these people directly and engage in quiet introspection.

In order to live my life doing as many good things as possible and avoiding as many bad things as possible, I quietly think about how I am now and what I should do in the future.

It is important to apply what you have thought to your life from tomorrow onwards. By repeating this process, you can continue to maintain a high quality of life and live happily.

We chant the Nembutsu to declare our determination to live in this way and with the prayer that we will be welcomed into the Pure Land at the end.

That is the Higan festival at Shokoji Temple.
