November: Monthly memorial service at Shokoji Temple

In principle, all things are memorialized at Shokoji Temple memorial services. (In the following, we will assume that non-human things are memorialized.)

What is a memorial service? It is an expression of gratitude. We are who we are today thanks to the object of the memorial service. It is a ritual to express gratitude for that. Holding a memorial service also means saying goodbye to "something important (the object of the memorial service)." It is also an expression of determination to live to the fullest even without the "something important" from now on.

We are able to live every day thanks to many things. Food, clothes, tools, the list goes on and on. It is important for us to be grateful for each and every one of them.

Thank you for protecting my feet after wearing these shoes for so long.

Thank you to the pajamas I've been wearing since I was a little kid for improving the quality of my sleep.

Thank you for letting me enjoy the delicious white rice from my favorite region that I always eat.

As I retire the tools I have used at work for over 30 years, I would like to thank them for supporting my work up until now.

Thank you to the raccoon figurine displayed in front of the store for protecting it for so many years.

To my teddy bear that has been with me since I was a child, I would like to thank him for helping me become a member of society.

Once you have expressed your sincere gratitude, there is no need to worry. Just throw it away politely in the trash. It will likely be reborn in a new form and be useful to someone else.

If you have something that you feel special about and you feel more grateful for it, bring it to the temple and hold a memorial service for it. In the main hall, you can reflect on your past and the things that are important to you, and use them as nourishment for your future life.

By reflecting on what is important to you, you can remember the essence of things you had forgotten and put it into practice in your future life. This will make your life spiritually richer.

Today, we offered a memorial service for two Daikoku statues. We prayed for the store where they were located and the people associated with them to achieve further success.
