The Shokoji Temple's sutra copying classes are not calligraphy classes, so the goal is not to learn to write well. The purpose is to engage in self-reflection to reaffirm the true essence of things that are necessary to enrich our daily lives, and furthermore, to pray to the Buddha and be welcomed into the Pure Land like our beloved ancestors.
Unfortunately, I fell ill during the sutra copying session in July and was unable to meet everyone. I also imagine that the air conditioning malfunction made it very difficult for everyone to write. However, it is very admirable that you were able to face yourself.
The August sutra copying session has been cancelled due to an air conditioning malfunction. This will be the first sutra copying session in two months.
Well.
This September, let's reexamine the meaning of "lies."
The following passage is found in the Sutta Nipata, one of the earliest Buddhist scriptures:
He who hides things is known as a despicable person.

"Kakushigoto" is interpreted as "telling a lie."
So what if we were to say that "people who lie are despicable people"? The moment we say "I won't lie," we are lying. But what would happen if we were to honestly express our thoughts and feelings? It would be very hard to imagine that we would be able to maintain human relationships.
So why do we still consider liars to be "despicable people"? Because they cause trouble to others? So is it okay to lie or hide things if it doesn't cause trouble to others?
I don't know. What exactly is the important thing here?
It goes beyond whether or not you lie; it all comes down to being honest with yourself and with others.
This is what many philosophers have told us in various ways. Nevertheless, we struggle every day with the difficulty of remaining sincere.
Just the other day, I accidentally said something I shouldn't have said. It's so difficult to keep taking action even if you know it in your head.
What do you think? Starting today, let's try to be honest with ourselves and those around us for a month. Continuing to act with this mindset will surely enrich our lives little by little.
Please write your prayers with this determination in your copy of the sutra.
"Sincerity"
Let us write this, reflect calmly, and chant the Nembutsu with a sincere heart.
