Report on the Sutra Calligraphy Session (February 2024)

We would like to report that we held our sutra copying event in February.

Although the weather was bad and cold on the day, nine people attended.

This month, the chief priest spoke about "Abolishing evil and practicing good."

Honen Shonin, the founder of the Jodo sect, explained the difficulty of abandoning evil and cultivating virtue, saying, "Although the abolition of evil and the pursuit of virtue are the common admonitions of the many Buddhas, we in this age all violate them" (from "Words of Legends of Various Peoples").

The chief priest spoke about not striving for perfection but rather trying to avoid doing evil as much as possible, and also spoke about what good and evil are.

Recently, especially on social media, the actions and thoughts of individuals are widely disseminated, and it seems that there are many opportunities to question whether they are right or wrong. Furthermore, there are many people who become obsessed with that criticism and are hurt by it.

There is no such thing as equal good (or evil) for everyone in the world. How should we face this truth?

The chief priest said that it is important to continue to think and act sincerely without forcing your goodness on others, and without being forced by others. Here)

Some of the attendees were seen taking notes intently during the talk.

During the copying of sutras, everyone seemed to be able to calm their minds and concentrate.

At Shokoji Temple, we hold a sutra copying event on the first Sunday of every month. Anyone is welcome to join, so please feel free to come along. The next event is scheduled for March 3rd.

We will provide further information as the date approaches. Please take care of yourself.
