Message from the chief priest: After the July sutra copying session

title tenen

The July sutra copying session was successfully completed.

I would like to gradually return to the original form of copying sutras. At the same time, I would like to hold modern copying sutras while making full use of the tools of modern civilization. As the saying goes, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, so today I gave a simple sermon using PowerPoint.

As I mentioned the other day, copying sutras was an act of necessity. The teachings of Buddha were originally passed down orally. When people were able to write on paper, they began to copy the written contents and pass them on, which is how copying sutras began. With the invention of printing technology, the purpose of spreading Buddhism disappeared, but it has continued to be valued as a form of Buddhist training related to spiritual cultivation.

In a sutra copying session, which has such a history, it is not necessary to aim at writing characters well. If you want to be able to write characters well, it would be more effective to go to a calligraphy class. In a sutra copying session, the primary purpose should be to calm the mind and reflect on oneself.

And the most important thing in the Shokoji sutra copying gathering is to chant the Nembutsu. I will talk about that next time.
