The other day, we held a Flower Festival at the Kita-Urawa branch of Shokoji Nursery School together with the head priest of Shokoji Temple (representative of Shokoji Nursery School), so we would like to share with you today what it was like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The "Flower Festival" is an event to celebrate the birth of Buddha (who everyone calls "Nono-sama" at the nursery school). At Shokoji Nursery School, there is a statue of Buddha at the entrance of each school, so "Nono-sama" is a very familiar presence to the children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Flower Festival, a flower-decorated hall called the "Hanamidou" is prepared and the "Buddha's birth (Shaka statue)" is placed inside. Once preparations are complete, the Flower Festival finally begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, six children represented the group and offered incense, lanterns, and flowers. They picked up one in pairs and worked hard together to carry it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that, everyone offered flowers. With the support of the nursery teachers, everyone offered flowers to Nono Shrine in their own way. After offering the flowers, some children were able to clap their hands properly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After we were ready to celebrate Nono-sama, the head priest recited the sutra. We slowly chanted "Namu Amida Butsu" 10 times, and everyone clapped their hands together!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, we all sing the song we always practice. We hold the prayer beads and clap our hands while singing. It looks so impressive to see the children holding the prayer beads tightly in their small hands!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were able to sing "Nono-sama" and "Shitteiru" loudly to the accompaniment of the piano. I wonder if Nono-sama heard our voices?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the song, it is time to pour sweet tea on the Buddha. The sweet tea pouring represents the nectar that fell on him when he was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the support of the nursery teachers, the children took turns pouring sweet tea on the "Nono-sama" flower shrine. The children who were able to pour the sweet tea well looked very proud! For the children who still found it difficult, the nursery teachers helped them pour the sweet tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the children have rinsed the tea, the head priest presents them with some sweet tea candy. Enjoy it with your family at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
