As the name suggests, Shokoji Temple's monthly memorial service is a regular ceremony in which all kinds of memorial services are performed jointly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a Nembutsu dojo, Shokoji places great importance on "first chanting the Nembutsu before doing anything." We also place importance on introspection (self-reflection) in order to spend each day with peace of mind while chanting the Nembutsu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This monthly memorial service is an open ceremony that can be attended not only by those who wish to hold a memorial service, but also by parishioners and the general public who are interested in Nembutsu and Naikan. People with a wide range of goals and thoughts can participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25cfThe form of memorial service and its significance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At our monthly memorial service, we will handle all kinds of things that are called "memorial services", such as memorial services for stupas, memorial services for memorial tablets, memorial services for needles, memorial services for dolls, memorial services for lucky objects, etc. By thinking carefully about the object of the memorial service and facing our own hearts (souls) that we cherish, we can naturally take the time to reflect on ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally, a memorial service was not just a ceremony to comfort the deceased, but also a ceremony to pray for the deceased to live a peaceful life from now on and eventually be led to the Pure Land. That is why it is important to be present at the memorial service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, even if you don't have anything in particular to offer, you are welcome to join us. If you have the desire to "reflect on yourself" or "put your mind in order," please feel free to join us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monthly memorial service is a joint ceremony, so those who wish to attend can gather together to perform the service. However, we can also accommodate those who are unable to attend but would like to request a memorial service, so please feel free to contact us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25cfMemorial service in June<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally, a Buddhist altar memorial service was held only for the memorial tablet of the principal image enshrined within it. However, the Japanese have treasured the eight million gods since ancient times. As with animism, they believe that souls reside within them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cannot give a clear answer as to what exactly the "soul" is. I guess that the "soul" that resides in all things is the memory of the people who have cherished it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That person must have faced the altar and done their best up until this day, through both difficult and happy times. Now that their role is coming to an end, they must face their own memories as the "god" residing in the altar, reflect on themselves, and live their future lives to the fullest. I believe that this is what it means to offer a memorial service not only for the honzon and memorial tablets, but also for the altar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We performed introspection and chanted the Nembutsu, praying for a peaceful life for the person who was memorialized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
